Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a South African succulent used by the Khoikhoi and San people for thousands of years. Its active compounds — mesembrine alkaloids — produce mood elevation, anxiety relief, and social confidence through a dual mechanism: serotonin reuptake inhibition and PDE4 inhibition for cognitive clarity. Kanna is legal in Minnesota, does not show on drug tests, and is non-addictive. The Education

Understanding Mesembrine Alkaloids & How Kanna Works

We've carried kanna since 2021 — before most people in Minnesota had heard of it. Here's the science, stripped down so you can make an informed decision rather than just a purchase.

What Is Kanna?

Sceletium tortuosum is a small succulent native to South Africa, used by the Khoikhoi and San people for thousands of years — traditionally fermented and chewed for mood elevation and social ease. It is called kougoed (something to chew) in Afrikaans.

The active compounds are mesembrine alkaloids, primarily:

  • Mesembrine — Primary mood-lifting and anxiety-reducing alkaloid
  • Mesembrenone — Cognitive-enhancing, calming
  • Mesembrenol — Relaxation and sedation at higher doses
  • Tortuosamine — Secondary supporting alkaloid
Not a stimulant. Not a psychedelic. Kanna operates in a completely different category from both. Low doses are mildly energizing; higher doses are relaxing and sedating.

How Kanna Works — Dual Mechanism

Kanna is one of very few botanicals with a documented dual mechanism of action that affects both mood and cognition simultaneously:

  • Serotonin Reuptake Inhibition (SRI) — Mesembrine inhibits serotonin reuptake, similar to how SSRIs work, keeping more serotonin available in synapses. This is what drives the mood elevation and anxiety reduction.
  • PDE4 Inhibition — Mesembrenone inhibits phosphodiesterase-4, an enzyme that breaks down cAMP in brain cells. PDE4 inhibition is associated with improved working memory, cognitive flexibility, and anti-inflammatory brain effects.
Key insight: The SRI effect is why kanna cannot be combined with prescription SSRIs or MAOIs — the combination can cause serotonin syndrome. Always disclose kanna use to your doctor if you take antidepressants.

Kanna vs. Kava — What's the Difference?

These are two completely different plants with different mechanisms, different effects, and different use cases. They're often asked about together because both are natural, non-addictive alternatives to alcohol and anxiety medication.

  • Kanna — Mood elevation + cognitive clarity + social confidence. Works via serotonin and PDE4.
  • Kava — Physical relaxation + anxiety relief + stress reduction. Works via GABA and kavalactone interactions.
  • Together — A popular pairing. Kanna handles the mood and social layer; kava handles the physical relaxation layer. Many customers use both in the same evening.
Our staff can help you decide which is right for your specific goals — or whether a combination approach makes sense for you.

Is Kanna Legal? Will It Show Up on a Drug Test?

Kanna is fully legal in the United States, Minnesota, and at the federal level. Sceletium tortuosum is not a scheduled or controlled substance. No prescription, card, or ID beyond age verification is required.

Kanna will not appear on any standard drug test. Mesembrine alkaloids are not screened on 5-panel, 10-panel, or 12-panel tests. Kanna does not trigger false positives for any commonly tested substance.

Safe for employment screening, DOT testing, athletic drug testing, and court-ordered testing.

Note: While kanna itself is unscheduled, always confirm with your employer or testing authority if you have specific concerns about novel botanicals.

How Much Kanna Should I Take? Serving Guide

Kanna effects shift character as serving size increases — start with one serving and let it find you

Kanna is one of the more serving-sensitive botanicals we carry. At a low serving, effects are subtle but real — a background mood lift, less mental friction, a quiet sense of ease. At a moderate serving the effects become clearly noticeable: mood elevation, reduced social anxiety, and the cognitive clarity that comes from PDE4 inhibition working alongside the serotonergic effects. Higher servings shift the profile toward relaxation and sedation. The rule is simple: start with one serving, wait a full 45–60 minutes, and let your body tell you where you are before deciding to take more.

  • Subperceptual / Daily Wellness
Low Serving A single small serving. Effects are subtle — background mood support, reduced mental friction, gentle stress resilience. The right starting point for first-time use and a popular daily stack for experienced users who want consistent low-level support without noticeable effects.
  • Mood Lift & Social Ease
Moderate Serving Effects become clearly noticeable here. Mood elevation is real, social anxiety quiets, conversations flow more naturally. This is the sweet spot for most people — enough to feel it without tipping into sedation. One to two servings depending on the format and your individual sensitivity.
  • Anxiety & Stress Relief
Moderate–Full Serving Anxiolytic effects become prominent as the serotonin reuptake inhibition takes hold. Good for pre-event nerves, situational social anxiety, or winding down after a high-stress day. Stay at this level until you know how your body responds.
  • Deep Relaxation / Evening
Higher Serving The profile shifts toward sedation and body relaxation. Best reserved for evening use or sleep support. Not the right territory for first-time use — get comfortable at lower levels across several sessions before going here.
  • First Time
One Serving Only One serving of your chosen format. Wait 45–60 minutes. Many people feel little the first time — this is normal and does not mean kanna won’t work for you. Your second and third sessions are far more informative than the first. Come talk to us if you have questions after trying it.

Kanna Dosing Rules

  • Start with one product One format, one dose. Establish your baseline before combining or increasing.
  • Empty or light stomach Kanna absorbs faster and more fully on an empty or lightly-fed stomach.
  • Wait 45–60 minutes Onset can be slower than expected. Do not re-dose before then.
  • Low dose first Effects are dose-dependent and shift character at higher doses. Low doses are stimulating; high doses are sedating.
  • No SSRIs or MAOIs Do not combine with prescription antidepressants. Serotonin syndrome is a real risk.
  • No alcohol Both affect serotonin pathways. The combination is unpredictable and inadvisable.
  • Rotation is smart Many experienced users take kanna 3–5 days per week rather than daily to maintain sensitivity and effectiveness.
  • Talk to us If you're on any prescription medication, ask our staff before purchasing. We will be honest with you.

Stacking Guide

What Kanna Pairs Well With

Kanna's dual mechanism — serotonin and PDE4 — means it layers well with botanicals and supplements that work through different pathways. These are the combinations our customers actually use and our staff actually recommend.

Kanna + Kava

The most popular pairing we see. These two plants do completely different things and complement each other almost perfectly.

  • Kanna handles the mood layer — elevation, social confidence, cognitive ease
  • Kava handles the physical layer — muscle relaxation, stress relief, body calm
  • Together: social ease with full-body relaxation. No intoxication, no hangover, no impairment
How to stack: Take kanna first. Add kava 30–45 minutes later once kanna effects are established. Start with conservative doses of both until you know how you respond to each individually.

Kanna + Kratom

Different mechanisms, different effects — these two cover ground the other doesn't.

  • Kanna — Mood elevation, social ease, anxiety reduction via serotonin + PDE4
  • Kratom — Energy and focus (low dose) or pain relief and calm (higher dose) via opioid receptors
  • Together: kratom handles the energy or pain layer; kanna lifts the mood and social layer on top of it
How to stack: Take kratom first, wait 20–30 minutes, then add kanna. Both on an empty stomach for best results. Keep doses moderate when combining.

Kanna + L-Theanine

A clean, focused calm stack — popular for work, studying, or any situation where you need to be sharp and relaxed simultaneously.

  • L-Theanine increases alpha brain wave activity — the state associated with relaxed alertness
  • Kanna's PDE4 inhibition adds cognitive clarity and working memory support on top
  • Together: reduced mental friction, better focus, lower background anxiety — without any sedation
How to stack: 100–200mg L-theanine with a low-to-moderate kanna dose. Works well as a daytime focus and productivity stack. One of the gentlest and most consistent combinations we recommend.

Kanna + Lion's Mane

A longer-term cognitive stack. Kanna provides immediate PDE4-driven clarity; lion's mane works over time on nerve growth factor and neuroplasticity.

  • Lion's mane — Hericenones and erinacines stimulate NGF, supporting brain health and memory over weeks of consistent use
  • Kanna — Immediate mood and cognitive support while the lion's mane builds
  • Together: daily wellness stack with both immediate and cumulative cognitive benefits
How to stack: Lion's mane daily (500–1000mg), kanna 3–5 days per week for maintenance. This is a stack for the long game — results from lion's mane build over 4–8 weeks of consistent use.

Kanna + Magnesium Glycinate

An evening wind-down stack that addresses anxiety from two different angles without any sedating medication.

  • Magnesium glycinate — Calms the nervous system via NMDA receptor modulation, reduces muscle tension, supports sleep quality
  • Kanna — Serotonergic anxiety relief and mood support
  • Together: physical and neurological calm. Works especially well for people whose anxiety has both mental and physical (muscle tension, restlessness) components
How to stack: 200–400mg magnesium glycinate with a moderate kanna dose 60–90 minutes before bed. One of the better natural alternatives to benzodiazepines for evening anxiety.

Kanna + Functional Mushrooms

A broad-spectrum wellness stack pairing kanna's immediate effects with mushrooms' slower-building immune and cognitive benefits.

  • Reishi + kanna — Deep relaxation and immune support alongside mood ease. Popular evening stack
  • Cordyceps + kanna — Energy and endurance with mood support. Morning or pre-workout
  • Turkey tail + kanna — Gut-brain axis support alongside serotonergic mood benefits
How to stack: Most functional mushroom products can be taken alongside kanna without concern. Match the mushroom to your goal — reishi for evening, cordyceps for morning, lion's mane for focus. Our staff can build the right combination for your specific situation.
What NOT to stack with kanna: SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and other prescription serotonergic medications — serotonin syndrome is a real risk. Alcohol is also inadvisable. Benzodiazepines at higher doses can over-sedate. If you take any prescription medication, talk to our staff or your doctor before adding kanna to your routine.

Common Questions

Kanna FAQ — Answered by People Who Know

We've been carrying kanna since 2021 — before most people in Minnesota had heard of it. These are the questions we get every week.

Kanna produces a genuine mood lift — a sense of lightness and ease that is difficult to describe but unmistakable when you feel it. Social anxiety quiets. Conversations flow. You feel more present and more comfortable in your own skin.

At lower doses, kanna is mildly stimulating and clarity-promoting. At higher doses, it becomes more relaxing and sedating. The shift in character at different doses is one of the most interesting things about it.

What it is not: a psychedelic, a stimulant, or anything like being drunk. Judgment stays intact. Coordination stays intact. You just feel meaningfully better.

Best analogy: the social ease and mood lift you're looking for from a drink, without the impairment, calories, or next-day cost.

No — do not combine kanna with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs. This is the most important contraindication for kanna.

Kanna's mesembrine acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI). Combining it with prescription serotonergic medications can cause serotonin syndrome — a potentially serious condition involving agitation, rapid heart rate, high temperature, and muscle tremors.

Do not combine with: Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Effexor, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin (NDRI — lower risk but still caution), or any MAOI. If you take any of these, kanna is not for you without physician guidance.

If you take any prescription medication, tell our staff before purchasing. We will be straightforward with you.

No. Kanna will not appear on standard drug tests. Mesembrine alkaloids are not screened on any standard employment, DOT, athletic, legal, or military drug test panel. Kanna does not trigger false positives for any commonly tested substance.

Safe for: employment drug screening, DOT testing, professional athletic testing, court-ordered testing, and military testing.

Kanna is not considered physically addictive. There is no documented withdrawal syndrome, and the Khoikhoi and San people used it for thousands of years without recorded addiction concerns.

That said, like any substance that affects mood and serotonin, psychological habituation is possible — relying on kanna to manage mood over the long term instead of addressing root causes. Most of our customers use it 3–5 days per week rather than daily, which maintains effectiveness and keeps use intentional.

Tolerance does develop with very frequent use — effects may become subtler over time. A short break (a few days to a week) fully resets sensitivity.

These two botanicals operate through completely different mechanisms and are better understood as complementary than competitive:

  • Kanna — Acts on serotonin and PDE4. Mood elevation, social ease, cognitive clarity, anxiety relief. More consistent and predictable effects. No opioid receptor involvement.
  • Kratom — Acts primarily on opioid receptors and adrenergic receptors. Pain relief, energy (at low doses), sedation (at high doses), and mood support through different pathways.

Many of our customers use both — kratom for its energy, focus, or pain-relief effects and kanna for mood and social layers. The combination is generally well-tolerated. Come in and talk to our staff about building the right stack for your specific goals.

Zembrin is a patented, standardized kanna extract produced by P.L. Thomas from Sceletium tortuosum. It is the most clinically studied form of kanna, with human clinical trials backing its efficacy and safety profile.

Zembrin is standardized to 0.35–0.45% total alkaloids with a specific mesembrine-to-mesembrenone ratio. This makes it more consistent dose-to-dose than unpatented kanna extracts, which can vary in alkaloid profile.

Some of our products contain Zembrin; others use non-patented full-spectrum kanna extract. Both are effective — Zembrin offers more consistency and clinical backing; full-spectrum extracts may offer a broader alkaloid profile. Ask our staff which is in the specific product you're considering.
